The Bachelor of Theology (BTh) is Laidlaw College's flagship undergraduate degree — a three-year (level 7) journey into Scripture, Christian thought, and faithful practice. It gives every student a solid biblical, theological and practical foundation, while leaving room to follow your own questions and calling. It is for anyone who wants to think deeply about God and live wisely in the world, whether you are preparing for vocational ministry or seeking to integrate your faith with every part of life.
Across the degree you will engage Scripture in depth, the history and theology of the Church, and the skills of interpretation, reflection and leadership — all within a supportive, bicultural learning community that takes seriously the perspectives of Aotearoa New Zealand.
General degree, or a specialisation
You can study the BTh as a general degree — designed to give you a wide foundation with freedom to choose across the curriculum — or follow a specialisation: a curated three-year plan of study focused on a particular field. Specialisations include:
- Biblical Studies — read Scripture closely in its original contexts.
- Christian Thought & History — trace the ideas and movements that shaped the Church.
- Mission Studies — engage God's mission across cultures and communities.
- Pastoral Leadership — form the character and skills to lead and care well.
- Youth Leadership — equip for ministry with young people.
Study your way
Study the BTh on campus in Henderson or Christchurch, or by Distance Learning. Flexible options let you combine on-campus and distance courses, and study full-time or part-time around the rest of life.
Where it can lead
The BTh is a springboard. Graduates go on to ministry, mission, teaching and a wide range of vocations — and many continue into graduate and postgraduate study.
- Bachelor of Theology with Honours (BTh Hons) — extend your study into level 8 research.
- Graduate Diploma in Theology and postgraduate study.
- Diploma in Christian Studies — a level 5 entry point into theological study.
